Understand your level at playing the short game, a very important phase of the game. You only need to find a pitching area where the green is 20 meters long (fig. 1), not sloping, almost flat , have 5 golf balls you usually play with (no practice balls). Now look carefully for 3 different situations, listed below :
Simple lie/mowed grass e.g. fairway
Medium lie /slightly higher grass e.g. semi rough
Complex lie/high grass, rough or extra mowed grass
Fig. 1
Once the above situations are found you can start the challenge carefully the same way you would in a competition or in a game with friends.
From a simple lie, say 15 meters from a hole, take 5 shots to the hole with the club you want. After the shots check how many are within a distance of 2 shafts from the hole (use the same club you made the shot with) and make a note of the number.
From a medium lie and the ball pitched in less grass, say recently mowed, hit 5 more and check how many are within a distance of 2 shafts.
Finally look for a complex lie, one where you need to clear an obstacle to get to the hole, be it a bunker or rough. From about 15 meters hit 5 more balls and note down the distance. To sum up you hit 15 balls from 3 different lies which frequently happens in a game. You can now make a final check and if your balls were all within a 2 shaft perimeter you don't need to go any further because these instructions will not help with other problems you may have. On the other hand if you hit within the 2 shaft perimeter fewer than 50% shots you are in the right place and thanks to what you will read and learn you will be able to improve your game during the following weeks.
If the result of the test was disappointing don't assume you are one of the few. As a matter of fact you are in good company! You belong to the category of players we place in a rather common hcp range, namely the one of those who play between 85 and 100 shots and the very ones who found the challenge complicated.
We know you are done changing wedges, you only have a short time at your disposal, not enough time to get to the golf course, you need simple ideas to work on and finally you are anxious to explore and understand the short game. o clear an obstacle to get to the hole, be it a bunker or rough.
